R'09 Twin World Congress - Davos, September 14 - 16, 2009
Resource Management and Technology for Material and Energy Efficiency
Dear Colleague,
We are happy to announce the preliminary program of the R'09 Twin World Congress, which is now available at http://www.r2009.org/ProgramOverview.php !
The R'09 Twin World Congress promotes innovative technologies and frameworks for resource management to improve material and energy efficiencies in the production, use, and recycling of materials.
The R'09 Twin World Congress is an example and an experiment in resource management: To be held simultaneously in two parts of the world - Davos in Switzerland and Nagoya in Japan - this congress will avoid many intercontinental flights, which are known to account for most of the resource demand of international congresses. The main halls at the two venues will be connected by teleconferencing technology system for four hours on September 14 and 15, when eight renowned plenary speakers will present their views to several hundred R'09 participants in Davos and Nagoya:
- Prof. Dennis Meadows, Director Institute for Policy & Social Science Research, Univ. of New Hampshire
- Prof. Hiroshi Esaki, The University of Tokyo
- Prof. Faye Duchin, Professor of Economics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
- Prof. Chettiyappan Visvanathan, Asian Institute of Technology
- Prof. Guibin Jiang, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences
- Prof. Marina Fischer-Kowalski, Professor of Social Ecology at Klagenfurt University
- Prof. Shiro Saka, Kyoto University
- Dr. Helga Weisz (tbc), Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)
Apart from the unique teleconferencing technology, the R'09 comes up with another highlight: it will be held in conjunction with the first World Resources Forum (WRF). The WRF is an independent, international platform for debate on global resource consumption issues, advocating innovation for resource productivity. The WRF is building a bridge from the natural sciences and engineering to economics; it aims to equip political decision makers to identify realistic policy options for sustainable growth. R'09 participants are welcome to attend the WRF Program on September 16, 2009!
R'09 is organized by Empa, the Swiss Materials Science Institute of the ETH Domain, together with the EcoTopia Science Institute at the Nagoya University (Japan).
Please register online at http://www.r2009.org/Registration.php .
Looking forward to meeting you in Davos, we remain,
Yours sincerely,
Prof. Dr. Lorenz Hilty,
Chairman of the R'09 International Scientific Committee
