Sustainable Innovation: Building & Construction Technologies
23rd February 2007
H.G. Wells Conference and Events Centre
Woking
Surrey
Organised by: The Centre for Sustainable Design
(www.cfsd.org.uk)
Sponsored by: South-East England Development Agency
(www.seeda.co.uk)
Background
Building and construction are in the front-line of the climate change
debate - with the sector contributing over 40% of greenhouse gas emissions
and producing major impacts from 'cradle to grave'. Buildings and homes are
major zones of energy consumption: in daily operation as artificial
environments for human life (e.g. heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation,
etc) and in relation to daily home or work tasks which use electrical
appliances (e.g. washing machines, boilers, televisions, computers, etc).
To reduce carbon dioxide emissions will require behavioural change,
innovative low carbon solutions and importantly, new thinking. The Stern
Review on 'The Economics of Climate Change' (see www.sternreview.org.uk)
recently highlighted that increased investment in R&D and innovation in
building technologies could have a profound impact on the emissions
attributed to buildings and increase climate resilience.
The UK building and construction sector also faces a range of other new
drivers including:
* Launch of the Code for Sustainable Homes
* New homes to be zero carbon by 2016
* Green leadership by major retailers e.g. M&S and Tesco
Each of these initiatives are likely to have significant implications for
future building technologies.
On a broader scale, the UK Sustainable Development Strategy (see
http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk) launched in 2005 highlighted the
importance of the climate change, resource productivity, sustainable
communities, and new patterns of sustainable consumption and production
(see http: www.score-network.org) including the key role of products,
design and innovation. This coupled to growing interest in the potential
role for government in driving innovation through Sustainable Public
Procurement (see
http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk/government/task-forces/procuremen
t/index.htm) means that creating, designing and developing techologies,
products and services with lower material and energy consumption will be of
increasing importance in the building and construction sectors.
Incorporating sustainable innovation into product and technology
development provides a range of benefits for companies:
* Lower compliance costs
* Cost savings
* Opportunities for innovation
* Reduced use of materials
* Reduced energy consumption
* Improved corporate and brand reputation
The Centre for Sustainable Design (www.cfsd.org.uk) - as part of the SEEDA
funded 'Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Innovation & Design' project -
will facilitate a high quality discussion on both the obstacles to
sustainable innovation in the building and construction sector and
importantly the emerging opportunities. The leading-edge speakers will
provide their visions about future challenges and business opportunities
for sustainable innovation and design.
The event will be of interest to all those interested in products,
innovation and sustainability and will include developers, builders,
contractors, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, consultants, architects,
designers, government, housing associations annd academics.
Benefiits to delegates will include:
* Leading-edge thinking: speakers will present emerging global trends, new
research and 'state the of art' developments
* New ideas: presentations will highlight potential business oportunities
* Networking: the event will bring together decision-makers and specifers
from the public and private sectors
